National Policies &
Advisor Responsibilities
Phi Eta Sigma operates under national policies to ensure consistency, transparency, and good standing across all chapters. These policies are designed to support advisors, protect students, and provide clear expectations for chapter operations.

Advisor responsibilities include:
-
Serving as the primary institutional liaison to the national office
-
Supporting chapter compliance and good standing
-
Providing general oversight of chapter finances and operations
-
Assisting with chapter transitions, inactivity, or closure when necessary

Advisors are not expected to manage day-to-day chapter activities but play an essential role in guidance, continuity, and accountability.
Most reporting occurs once per academic year, typically following new member induction or over the summer.
Programming,
Leadership & Service
Phi Eta Sigma’s national programs are designed to support early leadership development and the holistic growth of first-year students—developing mind, health, and character through scholarship, service, and engagement.
Advisors play an important role in helping students understand and access these opportunities while maintaining appropriate local autonomy.

National opportunities available to members include:
-
Competitive scholarships and academic recognition
-
The Member of Distinction program
-
Literacy-focused service initiatives
-

Officer Transitions
& Chapter Continuity
Consistent leadership transitions are essential to maintaining a healthy and active Phi Eta Sigma chapter. Advisors play an important role in providing continuity as student leadership changes from year to year.

Advisors are encouraged to support:
-
Annual officer transitions and onboarding
-
Continuity of chapter records and reporting
-
Advisor guidance during leadership turnover or restructuring

The national office is available to assist during transition periods, particularly when chapters experience leadership gaps or changes in advisor availability.

Closed or
Inactive Chapters
Phi Eta Sigma recognizes that chapter activity can change over time due to shifts in leadership, staffing, or institutional priorities. Closed or inactive chapters are encouraged to explore reactivation when circumstances allow.

The national office can assist with:
-
Reviewing chapter history and records
-
Discussing advisor interest and institutional readiness
-
Identifying a clear pathway toward reactivation
-

Conversations about reactivation are exploratory and supportive, with no obligation to proceed.
