Member of Distinction Program Initiative Launches

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

TUSCALOOSA, AL -

Phi Eta Sigma has launched a new Member of Distinction program, offering students an opportunity for further engagement in the honor society and its entire membership a more complete experience through the new national programming making up the Member of Distinction program.

The Member of Distinction program presents six national programming opportunities, completion of each one granting the student a point. A student needs four points to secure Member of Distinction status. The programming was designed with Phi Eta Sigma’s core values of mind, health and character in mind.

The six qualifying events are:

  • A healthy cooking demonstration webinar with Ada Ruth Huntley, a Phi Eta Sigma member and student at the Culinary Institute of America (mind)

  • A resume and interview skills workshop (mind)

  • Walk or run the Phi Eta Sigma 5K for $10K, benefitting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (health)

  • A mental health webinar (health)

  • Raise at least $100 for philanthropic projects related to literacy, including in the 5K for $10K (character)

  • Volunteer five or more hours of service related to literacy (character)

Students can also substitute an applicable local chapter activity to count for one of their four points.

Phi Eta Sigma members who achieve Member of Distinction status will be seen as more attractive candidates for scholarships and executive committee positions, although being a Member of Distinction is not a requirement for either. The initial class of Members of Distinction will be inducted at the 2022 National Convention in Birmingham, Alabama, in October.

Members of Distinction are also eligible for an exclusive piece of graduation regalia: an official Phi Eta Sigma stoll.
