Statute VII of the Phi Eta Sigma Constitution provides that all income from the Founders Scholarship Fund shall be used to grant scholarships and awards to Phi Eta Sigma members. Fund currently provides the following scholarships and awards:

  • " The Thomas Arkle Clark Scholar-Leader of the Year Endowed Scholarship, named in honor of the founder and first Grand President of Phi Eta Sigma. Awarded for the first time in the 2006-07 academic year, this scholarship is presented each year to the member who, in the judgment of the Scholarship Committee, best exemplifies the ideals of Phi Eta Sigma and is selected from among the pool of scholarship applicants.
  • Four Distinguished Member Scholarships of $7,500 each for the first year of full-time graduate or professional study.
  • Thirty-seven Distinguished Member Scholarships of $6,000 each for full-time undergraduate study.
  • Additional $1,000 awards for full-time undergraduate study.

Fund income available for the 2011-2012 scholarships was nearly $300,000. These scholarship and award winners are listed in the Current 2011-2012 Scholarship and Award Recipients section of this web site.

Applicants must be members of Phi Eta Sigma. Those applying for undergraduate scholarships or awards must be nominated by their chapters. Application forms for undergraduate scholarships may be obtained from the chapter adviser. Members applying for graduate scholarships may also contact the chapter adviser, or they may request an application form by mailing a request along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the national office.

The current members of the Scholarship Committee are Mr. Tony Kemp, Mercer University, Chairperson; Ms. Mary Jo Custer, Syracuse University; and Dr. John Sagabiel, Grand Secretary-Treasurer. The committee uses the following criteria in selecting recipients:

  1. High scholastic record with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  2. Participation in local chapter activities.
  3. Evidence of creative ability.
  4. Potential for success in chosen field.
  5. Letters of recommendation, not to exceed three.

All applications for undergraduate scholarships should be submitted to the chapter adviser for approval by the local deadline date given on the application form. Each chapter of Phi Eta Sigma may submit at least one undergraduate application. Chapters that inducted 150 or more members last year may submit undergraduate applications according to the following scale:

  • 150 - 299 inductees -> 2 undergraduate applications
  • 300 - 499 inductees -> 3 undergraduate applications
  • 500 - 999 inductees -> 4 undergraduate applications
  • 1000 or more inductees -> 5 undergraduate applications

Chapters may submit as many graduate applications as they deem appropriate. Applications for graduate scholarships may be sent directly to the secretary of the Scholarship Committee at the national office address or may be submitted to the chapter adviser so that all chapter applications may be sent to the national office in one mailing.

All scholarship applications must be postmarked no later than March 1.
